The Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel has promised to save those who wear the scapular from the fires of hell; She will also shorten their stay in purgatory if they should pass from this world still owing some debt of punishment.

This promise is found in a Bull of Pope John XXII. The Blessed Virgin appeared to him and, speaking of those who wear the Brown Scapular, said, “I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in purgatory I shall free so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting.”

What is one sure way of making sure you do not go to hell? Stay close to Our Blessed Mother! Our Lady of Mount Carmel gave to Saint-Simon Stock in 1251 th Brown Scapulary. She promised that whoever dies clothed in that garment would not suffer the pains of eternal fire, and if such one was to go to purgatory, she would rescue the person and their punishment would be diminished.  Of course, there are some conditions who involve the scapulary.  You have to do efforts to get to heaven (yes, you have to strive to be holy), so it should simply be normal for you to include some things in your day such as… a Chaplet. And that’s exactly one of the conditions. The Brown Scapulary is a sacramental, and sacramentals help to channel special graces in your life. Trust me, it really does work wonders in your life!

Mary is the Mediatrix of all Graces, as well she is a very powerful intercessor. This is understood partly because in Biblical times, the mother of the king would act as an intercessor for the people. We know that Jesus is the King of heaven and earth, and this makes His mother the Queen of heaven and earth, and an intercessor for us. It also makes her intercession very special, because she has the right of Queenship through the blood of her Son. This can be interpreted in two different ways, one being that she is Queen because she is the biological mother of Jesus. She has the hereditary right to be Queen. But the other sense is that she is Queen because Jesus made himself Lord of all creation through His passion, death, and resurrection. He conquered sin through His precious blood. The Queenship of Mary is related in a very powerful sense to the passion of Christ.

The prophet Elijah is commonly said to be the founder and patriarch of the Carmelites. Also, the mystic Anne Catherine Emmerich says that Our Lady is tied to Mount Carmel in a very special way. She explains in her visions that Mary went to Mount Carmel for some time when she was a child. She also says that some of the Old Testament priests lived there, much like modern day monks. In fact, Catholic Tradition holds that people since the time of Elijah, holy men and woman dedicated their lives living there.

Saint Louis de Montfort warned that some may have false devotions to our Blessed Mother… 92. There are, I find, seven kinds of false devotion to Mary, namely, the devotion of (1) the critical, (2) the scrupulous, (3) the superficial, (4) the presumptuous, (5) the inconstant, (6) the hypocritical, (7) the self-interested. I encourage you to read about the seven kinds of false devotions to our Blessed Mother starting at #93 up to #104.

The Blessed Virgin assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled:

  1. Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.
  2. Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).
  3. Recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin OR Observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays OR With permission of a priest, say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary OR With permission of a priest, substitute some other good work.

Pope Benedict XV, the celebrated World War I Pontiff, granted 500 days indulgence for devoutly kissing your scapular.
